Sound Installation, 3 Axis Loudspeaker Tower with Live Sound Broadcasting System. Installed at The Wonder Cabinet in Bethlehem, Palestine 2025.

Since I arrived in the West Bank, I was captivated by the minarets of the mosques, by the beauty of each one and by their powerful sonic presence.

The soft chants that fill the air and envelop the city five times a day are the prayers that come from the loudspeaker arrays placed atop the mosques' minarets. This system generates an incredible interplay of voices that don't align or synchronize, but rather blend together like a kind of disjointed but very beautiful choir.

It's truly overwhelming and sparked a great deal of interest in me. Speaking with local people, I asked them about the prayers, and they told me that for them, it's a kind of meditation, like a pause in their day to think and pray, to give thanks... which I found even more beautiful.

I spent many days listening to the prayers, closing my eyes as they began, and even though I didn't understand what they were saying, I was filled with a kind of tranquility. These prayers last about 10 minutes each time.

Inspired by the minarets of mosques as a sound transmission structure, I was interested in the idea that the Wonder Cabinet Art Center, which tirelessly and laudably dedicates itself to transmitting and supporting culture to the community in Palestine and which is a bastion of cultural resistance, both contemporary and traditional, would also have a sound tower in the building from which they could transmit, amplify, and give voice to projects, texts, voices, stories, songs, and more.

This was the idea behind my desire to develop this Sound Tower (minaret) for the Wonder Cabinet, as a structure and platform that can continue transmitting its messages to the community, not only when you come to the building, but also as a transmission that spreads through the air of the city.

The idea is to commission and host special curated programs for the Sound Tower, promoting the participation of Palestinian artists, both local and throughout the Palestinian geography and diaspora, as well as artists, writers, singers, and voices from around the world.

Sound Tower at the Wonder Cabinet

Due to its versatility and mobile nature, the Sound Tower can be placed both inside and outside the building. Furthermore, the exact same speakers used in mosque minarets were purchased for the piece, giving the reproduced sound a ceremonial character and a kind of reverberation. Like the minarets, the speakers can be left outdoors and are highly durable, in addition to projecting sound over long distances.
