Music Composition created by a set of interpretative instructions given to a performer in form of stones. Piece for 1 or more performers/ small or large ensemble in 5 movements.
I was fascinated by the idea of composing a piece who gave the performer all freedom to interpret it … a piece that is conceived based on the sensibility of the performer. By developing a open score, the Composer becomes an expectator of his own piece and the outcome become a surprise.
In “STONE MUSIC” score they are no rules and pre-established Tempi, Duration and overall sound. The idea is to treat sound and a musical piece as art… and get surprised by the result (always a different result for the same piece).
THE STONES & THE SCORE
I was inspired by the fact that i´m living in the mountain, so I chose my actual location in the “Collserola” Natural Park to take walks and select the stones that I was going to use for the score. During my walks I carefully selected many stones due to their characteristics (some times by color, size, share, texture…).
For the Final Score I selected 25 of these stones in groups of 5 to create 5 different movements (5 stones x 5 movements). Each group of 5 stones in the score were set by holding the 5 stones and throwing them as a "coin toss" style - in reference of the ideas of “Chance Operations” by John Cage. The way and position in which the stones landed on the paper remained and configured the score.
STONE MUSIC SCORE (5 Movements)
PERFORMERS (INVITED MUSICIANS)
One of the challenges of this piece was to found the right musicians to interpret and play the score. I´m lucky enough to know some of my favorite artists/musicians and I knew they will understand the vision and the character of this score.
With complete trust in their interpretation, I gave NO instructions or guidelines …
The process is simple: I send the score to the players in advance so they have the chance to study it and analyze it. Once they decided that are ready to interpretate the piece, we recorded without cuts.
There is NO mayor editing on the final audios but the recordings were made outdoors in a very windy conditions so I tried to reduce the wind blows and noise, but leaving a bit of that open air feeling.
